This is something that I did before first flight, but I’m just getting around to posting info about it now. On the first few taxi tests, my Skyview started complaining that it was seeing a mismatch between the heading the GPS was indicating and the magnetic heading reading it was getting from the ADARHS unit. So, I tried to re-calibrate the ADAHRS and had a real tough time. After some probing around with a small compass, I realized that I had the ADAHRS positioned in a high magnetic field area right over the gear pump. So, I had to find a better place. Dynon combines both the magnetometer and air data system in one box, so I’d prefer to have it mounted near the nose so I don’t have to run the pitot and static lines to the back of the plane. After some inspection with a compass, I found that closer to the nose the magnetic field seemed to die down, so I re-mounted the ADAHRS box right ahead of the canard but just aft of the nose inspection hole. You’ll notice that I just used a temporary, non-aviation, DB-9 cable – that was just to test. It turned out that my original cable would reach to that position. I was able to get the heading to calibrate there.
