Fuel level senders

img_0545I chose to install capacitance fuel level senders.  The Velocity does have visual indicators of fuel level in the form of sight tubes mounted in the rear strake cutouts, but I suspect that these will not be very easy to see at night, particularly the one on the pilot’s side.  The capacitance fuel senders will work with the Dynon Skyview.  I wanted to put the fuel sender units as aft as possible so they sat behind the rear vanity cover.  That way, I wouldn’t have to cutout reliefs for these in the cover.  This posed a bit of a challenge because that part of the gas tank has the gear wells in it, so the fuel probe had to be bent and oriented so it cleared the gear wells, but still sampled to the bottom of the tank.  I think I got  it right.

Because I didn’t want any chance foam core being exposed to the fuel, I had a friend machine up some 1/2″ thick aluminum mounting disks.  I cut out the interior layer of fiberglass and all the foam in ~ a 2 1/2″ circle.  I bonded the alumiinum mounting disk place using JB Weld, then micro-filled the gap around the disk.  Although it isn’t shown in the picture, I also put a fillet of micro on the interior of the disk.  There is no chance the fuel can leak out into the foam layer.  As you can see, the micro fills the area around between the Al mounting disk and hole in the fiberglass.  The sensor tube was bent appropriately, and a cork gasket was used between the sensor unit and Al mounting disk.

Although only the pilot side is shown, senders were installed in both tanks.
