More work on the package shelf

This week I’ve been working on getting all the fiberglass work finished on the package shelf.  This turned out to be a lot more work than I thought it would be.  It also consumed a lot more BID and epoxy that I thought!  After having fabricated the essential structure, I wanted to add hinged access doors so I could easily inspect the RG assembly, fuel system or any thing else mounted on the firewall.  Basically, I cut out the doors from the original panels, then trimmed them down about 1/4″ on each side, duct-taped over the opening perimeter, laid the door back in the opening and then added 2 layers of BID overlap to create a flange for the door.  After that side had cured, I peeled the door off the opening then added a couple layers of BID to the underside of the flange.  After everything had cured, I trimmed the flange to create a nice edge.  It turned out quite nice.  Another order to ACS for some piano hinges tho…
